### The simplest way to think about it

Imagine the smartest, fastest-reading intern you've ever met. This intern has read an almost unimaginable amount of writing — books, articles, websites, conversations. Because of that, they're very good at:

- Predicting what a good next sentence looks like
- Summarizing long things quickly
- Explaining ideas in different ways
- Drafting a first version of almost anything written

But this intern:

- Has never lived your life
- Doesn't actually "know" today's date unless you tell them
- Will sometimes state something wrong with total confidence
- Has no judgment about what matters most to *you*

That's AI — specifically the kind you interact with when you type into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. It's called a **language model** — a system trained to work with language by studying massive amounts of it. It's not thinking. It's not alive. It's predicting, very well, what a helpful response looks like based on patterns it has seen before.

### What it's genuinely good at

- Writing a first draft of something (email, letter, message)
- Summarizing something long and boring
- Explaining a confusing topic in plain language
- Brainstorming options when you're stuck
- Organizing messy information into something clear

### What it's genuinely bad at

- Knowing facts about *you* unless you tell it
- Being 100% accurate on specific numbers, dates, or citations
- Understanding nuance in a relationship or situation it can't see
- Replacing your judgment — it can inform a decision, not make it for you

## ***The one habit that matters most***

**Treat every AI answer like advice from a smart stranger — useful, but worth checking before you act on it.**

That's it. That single habit will keep you safe from 90% of the problems people run into with AI.

## Quick Recap

**AI "knows" things like a person does** → It predicts likely answers based on patterns in text

**AI is always right** → It can sound confident and still be wrong

**AI will replace your judgment** → It's a tool that supports your judgment

**You need to be technical to use it** → You just need to know how to ask clearly
